A night at Salt air bnb
There is just something about salt spring island…
I’ve never had a place that isn’t home, feel so much like home; A place that even after days there i never feel the nagging little twang of homesickness. A place i am always so sad to leave.
so when a friend of ours invited us to stay at their cottage and take some photos of their new cedar hot tub, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend a few days in Spring.
We caught a late ferry from the mainland, which meant that we pulled up to the cottage in the dark on a cold and rainy april night.
after a long evening of travel we couldn’t wait to relax inside. So we hustled in and were warmly greeted by wood clad walls, vaulted ceilings, a wood burning stove, and a wide open kitchen with countertops full of freshly baked sourdough, ginger rhubarb coffee cake, granola, a slab of butter, farm eggs and homemade plum jam.
we immediately looked at each other and silently agreed... salt air bnb felt quite literally like a slice of heaven. Re-energized by our beautiful accomodations we hustled to unpack the car.
it was pitch black and freezing outside, but the rain had stopped and The warmth of the steamy hot tub was calling our name. So we rummeaged through out suitcases to find out bathing suits and settled into the hot tub.
When we were all warm and pruned up from the bliss of the hottub, we ran inside and ate a midnight snack of coffee cake before climbing the stairs into the loft to greet our bed. when we hopped into the soft cushy sheets, it took only seconds for us to fall fast asleep.
The next morning we woke to sunshine beaming through the bnb’s skylights and We watched as the suns rays danced along the walls, creating the most beautiful glimmering lighs and shadows.
in the light of day the cottage looked even more beautiful. So We brewed fresh coffee’s and set out to photograph the cottage in all it’s morning glory, Because when the light is perfect, the cameras start calling, and you must go.
morning at the salt air cottage is nothing short of magical. the golden sun rises over the tall trees and beams through the branches and fills the yard with the most stunning light.
when we looked out into the yard basking in a morning glow, it looked entirely different and new when compared to the dark of night we had been greeted the day before.
we sipped our coffees and watched as the cool morning air met the warmth of the hot tub to create a hypnotizing mist that seemed to be calling us to it, and we couldn’t resist a morning dip, so that’s exactly what we did.
Once we had a few photos under our belt, we toasted up a couple fresh slices of sourdough, and brushed them with a healthy amount of melty butter and jam for breakfast.
After our morning dip we proceeded with a slow day at the cottage. a little bit of work here, another coffee there… read a few pages of a book on the couch and broke into the board gamed stashed away in the cabinet.
but mostly we plotted for the photoshoot we had planned for that evening. A golden hour hot tub photoshoot was the plan, and we both couldn’t wait to see what the evening light would bring.
when the time finally came, golden hour turned out to be a bit to bright for our vision, but once the sun had set and the soft light of blue hour took over, it was perfection.
We decided on a monochrome vibe and green was the common theme. green ferns, bamboo, moss, trees called for a green bathing suit and a green hat… It felt like a bit of a risk - like our subject might get lost among the backdrop, but unbenownst to us it would tuwn out to be one of our favourite colour styles.
When we looked at the photos later on, we would both agree that monochrome might be our new favourite way to shoot.
that night we had clear skies, and without the light pollution from the city, the island made for perfect night sky gazing and phtoography. So we set up the tripod and ate pizza under the stars.
we had three nights at salt air bnb, but it just didn’t feel like enough. to say we were sad to leave that little cottage would be an understatement. we could have stayed forever.
we did leave… but not before we snapped a silly photo on the polaroid that lives in the cottage and added our two cents to the guest book. i loved this book so much. i loved knowing that others had happy times here, and to know that we were a part of that felt really special.
the moments we had at salt aire will forever be in our hearts and memories.
